For the Love of Lego

I have had a love for Lego since childhood, so you can imagine how thrilled I am now that my children are old enough to play with them.  "Can I help you put together a 1,000 + piece set that will likely take days to complete, you ask? Why, yes. Nothing would please me more!".  After more than sixty years since its introduction, Lego is as popular as ever.  It's no surprise that we have been getting asked to do more and more Lego-themed confections.  And I am not complaining...every time we get one of those requests, my inner child jumps for joy!  Here are some of our recent Lego creations:

Lego brick cake with fondant Lego man:
vanilla cake with dyed vanilla buttercream

Assorted Lego-themed cupcakes:
chocolate and vanilla cupcakes with assorted fondant toppers

Lego Ninjago cake:
Double chocolate cake with custom fondant decorations

Having a Lego-themed party and like what you see?  Let us help make it a little sweeter!

Don't worry, we're still here!

Hello all!  We seem to have dropped the blogging ball a bit by not having written in several months! Our sincerest apologies.  We blame the holidays...and all of the baking we've been doing!  We can't wait to tell you all about it in our upcoming posts!

Let's start with a cake that took us a little bit out of our comfort zone.  We were asked to do a GI Joe Snake Eyes cake for a little boy's 5th birthday party with a ninja theme.  First off, neither of us knew who the heck Snake Eyes even was...thank goodness for Google and the little boy's helpful mother who sent us several pictures.  Nevertheless, Snake Eyes has an edgy aesthetic that we weren't sure how would translate onto fondant. See what I mean?

However, we were determined to give Luke the best-looking (and tasting) Snake Eyes cake he could have imagined, so it was back to the drawing board...literally.  Every cake we make starts with a sketch, and after a lot of brainstorming and some crumpled paper, this is what we finally had:

Which after a lot of time, patience, and hard work in the kitchen, led to this:

And did I mention it tasted incredible?!  The cake itself was a vanilla butter cake layer over a chocolate cake layer with our vanilla cream cheese buttercream frosting in between the layers and on the outside.  Delicious!

The birthday boy was quite pleased with the end product and we couldn't be happier!  This experience reminded us that going outside of one's comfort zone is not only necessary for growth, but it's also a lot of fun.  We love a good challenge, so bring it on!

Tangled

A few weekends ago we had the pleasure of creating a "Tangled" themed birthday cake for a special little princess. The cake turned out wonderful, and when we heard the birthday girl ate the castle, we couldn't have been happier!

We made a vanilla cake with pink cream cheese frosting. The tower was quite an undertaking! It was huge and heavy! We made it out of rice krispie treats and cake, and then covered it in fondant.

Baking For Bastrop

Last weekend Simply Sweet donated over $250 worth of baked goods for Austin Bakes for Bastrop. Together with other bakers, bloggers, volunteers, professional chefs, and business owners we helped raise $12,765 for the Central Texas Wildfire Fund. It was so wonderful to be a part of this group and help out in any way we could.

One touching moment from the bake sale was when a young girl walked up to me (Jenn) and said, "Thank you so much for what you are doing. You don't know how much this means to me. My father's house burnt down in the fire." I was so touched by her, as were the others at our table. It made what we were there doing so much more meaningful.

We want to thank all our family and friends who came out to support us as well! We hope you enjoyed your cookies and cupcakes!

About our Confections

Did you know that some baking establishments (specifically grocery store bakeries) use boxed mixes that contain questionable ingredients like partially hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors and chemical preservatives?  We firmly believe that using the best available ingredients produces the best-tasting results.  That is why we make all of our confections from scratch using the the highest quality ingredients such as unbleached flours, rBGH-free dairy, cage-free eggs, and 100% pure extracts.  We think that you'll be able to taste the difference!

All of our confections are custom-made to our clients' specifications, making every creation truly one-of-a-kind.  Here is a unique example in a cake we recently completed, that replicated the 7 year-old birthday boy's artwork out of fondant:

Tyler's solar system collage cake consists of a double layer vanilla butter cake with raspberry filling and vanilla cream cheese frosting covered in black fondant with fondant/royal icing details.  We tried to stay as true to Tyler's original collage as possible.

The birthday boy was quite pleased with the result, which is always our ultimate goal.  Happy birthday, Tyler!
